Surface induced electronic Berry curvature in bulk Berry curvature free materials

چکیده

In recent years it has become clear that electronic Berry curvature (BC) is a key concept to understand and predict physical properties of crystalline materials. A wealth interesting Hall-type responses in charge, spin heat transport are caused by the BC associated bands inside solid: anomalous Hall effects magnetic materials, various nonlinear Nernst non-magnetic systems lack inversion symmetry. However, for largest class known materials –non-magnetic ones with symmetry– strictly zero. Here we show precisely these bulk BC-free finite can emerge at their surfaces interfaces. This immediately activates certain producing responses. We demonstrate this first principles calculations bismuth, mercury-telluride (HgTe) rhodium symmetries, revealing presence surface dipole quantum number these. opens up plethora explore harness emerging from exclusively boundaries.
